Welcome to IRE Tools.

This is the home for the tools I build. I'm Jason Ireland, and each tool here is a small, focused program that does one job well: edit a picture, plan a day, or find out what your PC is really running. Pick one below to read about it, open it or download it.

  • Free to use
  • No ads, no tracking

The Ireland Planner

Web app · works on any device with a browser

A day planner that lives in your browser. It is inspired by the classic paper Franklin Planner: a prioritized daily task list, an appointment schedule down the side, a monthly calendar and daily notes, with a Reference area of notebooks, sections and pages behind it.

A login is required. The planner is private. Accounts are created by the site owner, and there is no public sign-up. If you have been given a login, use the button below.
Open The Ireland Planner iretools.com/planner

Prioritized task list

Rank every task A, B or C, then mark it done, in process, forwarded to another day, or deleted. Forward everything still open with one tap.

Appointment schedule

An hour-by-hour day with a "now" line. Tap an empty line to add an appointment, or tap one to edit or move it.

Reference notebooks

Color-coded notebooks, sections and pages with a rich text editor: fonts, lists, checklists, tables, links, images and freehand drawing.

Search

Look up what you have written from one place, instead of paging back through old days.

Phones and tablets

Open it in Safari or Chrome on a phone or tablet, or add it to the home screen to run like an app.

Yours alone

Every person has a separate account and separate data. Download a backup of your own data any time from Profile.

Windows Processes: Inspect and Review

Free Windows program · WPIR

Ever wonder what all those entries in Task Manager are? This tool takes a snapshot of everything Windows is running right now, every process and every service, and builds a PDF report that explains what each one is, whether it looks safe, and whether it can be turned off.

Download wpir.zip Version 1.1 · 64-bit Windows · 3.0 MB ZIP

What the review does:

  • Scans all running processes and services (the tool leaves itself out).
  • Researches each one online, using reference sites, file databases and web search, to find out what it is and whether it is trustworthy.
  • Sorts every item into five categories: Windows Critical or Essential, Windows Optional, 3rd Party, Spyware/Malware/Virus, and Unknown.
  • Rates how risky each item is to disable, from 1 (safe to shut off) to 5 (extremely risky).
  • Saves the report as a PDF on your Desktop and opens it.
Safe and private. The review only reads information. It does not change, stop or remove anything. Only program names (to Wikipedia, ProcessLibrary and web search) and file fingerprints (hashes) of non-Microsoft files are sent online. It usually takes a few minutes. Without an internet connection you still get a report, with less detail.
The Windows Processes: Inspect and Review start window with a description of the review and Start Review and Exit buttons
The start window. One click on Start Review does the rest.
The first page of a report: machine, operating system and hardware details, a scan summary bar by category, the disable risk scale from 1 to 5, and a list of items needing attention
Page one of the report: system details, scan summary, the 1 to 5 disable risk scale and anything that needs attention.
A report page for Category 1, Windows Critical or Essential, with a table of services showing file name, location, manufacturer, disable risk and a description of what each does
Each category gets a table: what the item is, where it lives, who made it, how risky it is to disable, and what it does. (Sample report with test data.)

Windows may warn you the first time

This program is free and is not code-signed, because a signing certificate costs money for a program I give away. Windows SmartScreen may therefore show "Windows protected your PC" on first launch. If you trust the download, click More info, then Run anyway. To check you have the genuine file, compare its SHA-256 fingerprint with the ones below. In PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\wpir.zip
